In print and prose: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

To honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., we watched a short biography on his life and legacy on YouTube, listened to and analyzed his famous "I Have A Dream" speech, and scrutinized ways to counter racism, bigotry, and injustice at a personal level.

While we examined some aspects of that turbulent era, the following piece shows photojournalism at its best--weaving together a complex story primarily through the use of visual images. Take a look, truly a picture is worth a thousand words.Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Now that you have some background knowledge on King and the Civil Rights Movement, examine some of his most famous quotes. Select one that "speaks to you," identify it, and explain why as an extra credit comment.

Or, complete this sentence starter: "Dr. King inspires me to..." and post for extra credit.

Just to keep it fun and challenging, no repeats :)

"Dr. King inspires me to..." Dream Big. I am sure he was not able to see the results of his life in his early years. It shows that what a person dreams and thinks directs the outcome of ones life. Words are so powerful. If only we could all begin to speak words that build each other up and create better lives for us rather than tear us down and set us up for failure. Some one in MLK life must have showed him the power of words. Who knows, if you perfect this maybe some of your words will be repeated in the future to strengthen and encourage the masses. If not for the masses, maybe your words will change life for yourself or a single person for the rest of their lives. Filter your thoughts for they create your words and your words create your reality.

Dr. King inspires me to have faith in what I believe in and to stand up for what is important.

My favorite quote of Martin Luther King Jr. is "A man cannot ride on our back unless you are bent". Makes me reflect that I am truly in charge of my life.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

This quote reminds me that justice and democracy must be guarded or it will have a gradual decline.

I found the quote,"a man who won't die for something is not fit to live" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and it really made me think. If you are simply going through the motions of life without believing in something, what is your purpose of living? Without great passion for someone or something in life, what motivation do you have to keep living? Not only should you have a passion in life, you should be able to defend it and live for it until the very end.

A quote that speaks to me:

"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."

I really liked this quote because not only is it absolutely true, but Martin Luther King Jr. really lived his life by his own words. Even when his adversaries used violence and threats, he stuck to his belief of peace. Our world is still filled violence and hatred, and it seems to only be getting worse. I wonder how many people actually do counter hate with love. It's definitively something we should all think about and try in our own lives.

The quote that most inspired me was, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." It teaches people that you can't fight fire with fire; someone needs to be the bigger person and use some water. Just kidding:) It shows people that in order to get along you need to forgive and love.

"Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase."

i like this quote bescause its mostly true, if you never take a chance then you will never get anything done. we should all take at least one leap of faith towards something we beileve in.

One of my favorite quotes by Martin Luther king is "All progress is precarious, and the solution of one problem brings us face to face with another problem."
This quote says to me that you can never solve all the problems because there will always be another problem following it. Although, you should never stop trying to solve the problems because they will only build up and get worse if you do.

My favorite quote by MLK is as follows:

"Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies - or else? The chain reaction of evil - hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars - must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation."

The structure of his words makes this statement seem almost illuminating; glowing as if it is meant to guide your way into a new world. The old world MLK describes still exists today; the world where the average working-class American must love thy boss, love thy government, and love thy nation. While we obtain some rights today to speak out against these three when we feel strongly against an issue, there is no real thriving in America without doing as everyone tells you to do. America promises freedom, but have any of us ever really been free? If we do not love our boss, we must pretend as to keep a paying job. If we do not love our government, we grit our teeth and hope things get better. If we hate the nation as it stands, we dream of going other places. If one decides to be hateful, that hate will spread. If one decides to start a war, more wars will be caused later on. We need to get rid of the hatred and useless wars around the world if we really want to succeed as a loving, accepting society.

"Dr. King inspires me to..." take a look at the big picture. we as people need to look at what will happen in the long run of things. yes alot of us hear that and think of things like saving the earth from global warming by "going green" but we can do so much more for our lives and the lives around us. we as the younger generation need to take a stand and make a name for ourselves because before we know it we will be the ones running our nation. we need to focus on not picking on the little guy and not secluding ourselves to the social cliques. We need to stand together as one and stick up for each other. We could fight together and fix the mistakes that the elder generations has brought on to this nation. We should be picking up people when they are down regardless if we know them or not. Dr. King showed us that we can make an impact as an individual but one idividual isn't anything with out followers. i'm not asking for much just to do the little things because you never know how far it will go. something as small as making a stand for the calss nerd, can go a very long way.

"All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and importance and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence" This quote reminds me that all good intentions should be held at the greatest importance. People who do not work hard in what they believe in anything at all. By voicing your opinion and working for the people around you, you not only mentally represent your beliefs but physically as well.

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” ~Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. King inspires me to stand up for what is right, even if it may not be the most popular thing or even if it is a challange. Even when Dr. King was harrassed and beat down by people that didnt agree with his views, he kept fighting for what was right.

The quote, "Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed." by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, touched me in a way. This just reminded me how the blacks back then had to fight for their rights unlike whites who just had their rights. IT just shows how much blacks actually appreciated their freedoms unlike the whites who basically took it for granted.

The quote I chose is, "An individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law."

I chose this quote because depending on the situation this is stating that a man/women is willing to go against what her conscience tells her is wrong and what is lawfully wrong but chooses to proceed with the action anyway because to him or her it is the best decision in their case or situation. They know the consiquences but still go for it because of their beleifs or morals.
